Posted on Friday, 11 March 2011 in Book Self-Publishing

As we move into an era when authors have a real choice about whether they want to go the self-publishing or traditional publishing route, authorial control over the publishing process is a very very important issue, and it's something author Hannah Moskowitz recently touched on as well.

What Books Might Become In the Future

Posted on Thursday, 10 March 2011 in Book Self-Publishing

In the past a book was defined as anything printed between two covers. A list of telephone numbers was called a book, even though it had no logical beginning, middle, or end. A pile of blank pages bound with a spine was called a sketchbook. It was unabashedly empty, but it did have two covers, and was thus called a book.

Today the paper pages of a book are disappearing. What is left in their place is the conceptual structure of a book -- a bunch of text united by a theme into an experience that takes a while to complete. [Read Full Article at kk.org]

Posted on Wednesday, 09 March 2011 in eBooks

Hard to believe that just a few years ago, e-books were still a novelty item. Now Amazon is selling more e-book titles than print combined.

Amazon says that since April, it has been selling 105 Kindle titles for every 100 print copies it moves. Reminder: Amazon only started selling Kindle e-readers in November 2007.

Traditional Book Output Up 5%; Nontraditional Soars

Posted on Tuesday, 08 March 2011 in Book Cover Designers

Despite the belief in many quarters that the growth of e-books will mean the death of the printed book, the number of books produced by traditional publishers rose 5% in 2010, to a projected 316,480, according to preliminary figures released Wednesday morning from R. R. Bowker. That number, however, is dwarfed by the growth in output of nontraditional titles, which jumped 169% to 2,766,260. As Bowker notes, the majority of nontraditional titles consists largely or print-on-demand editions of public domain titles. Self-published titles are also included in the figure. Based on the preliminary figures, the combination of traditional and nontraditional books totaled a projected 3,092,740 in 2010, up 132% from 2010.

How Viral Copies of a Naughty Bedtime Book Changed Publishing

Fast Company;Something remarkable happened last Friday. A children's book hit the No. 1 spot on; Amazon.com's best-seller list. And it did so a month before the book is even slated for release.

You may have heard of the book—it's a best-seller after all.Go the Fuck to Sleep; by Adam Mansbach, began its life as a joke Facebook post in June. It was a particularly trying instance of bedtime with his 2-year-old daughter, and Mansbach let off some steam in the form of a humorous status update to his friends: "Look out for my forthcoming children's book, ‘Go the - to Sleep.' "

Avoid Digital Publishing Mistakes by Thinking of it as Investing

Posted on Sunday, 06 March 2011 in eBooks

There's some shrillness going on around digital publishing - whether it's folks worrying about not getting a lot of money away, or the fight or coming civil war between DIY (or VIP or whatever) writers and the establishment (agents, publishers, all of the above). I'm not saying they're wrong - but it's far simpler than all that.

Posted on Sunday, 06 March 2011 in eBooks

Despite some hype to the contrary, eBooks are not killing print. In fact, according to research firm Bowker, eBooks might actually be helping sell print books.

Based on a new report, which collected preliminary 2010 sales figures from U.S. publishers, Bowker is projecting that despite the popularity of eBooks, traditional U.S. print title output in 2010 increased 5%.

Why and How I Self-Published a Book

Posted on Thursday, 03 March 2011 in Book Self-Publishing

The book publishing industry is dead and they don’t know it. Its like how the typewriter industry died. And how companies like Blockbuster and Borders can’t survive. And the entire music industry is dying. And broadcast television might be on the way.  And the tablet industry is the first sign that companies like DELL might be in major trouble.
