OpenMargin launches to get readers, and authors, talking about e-books

Posted on Monday, 25 April 2011 in eBooks

OpenMargin aims to provide a social platform for readers and publishers alike. The idea is that readers’ engagement in titles will increase and the open discussion around titles helps expose new customers to the books. The company also plans to allow publishers to extend the life of their books by launching additional content within margins after the initial publication date. For example, authors or celebrities could provide their own notes for titles, creating additional value. OpenMargin also plans to offer an open API to allow developers to innovate on top of the platform.

E-Books Fail To Save Publishers From Revenue Decline

Posted on Thursday, 21 April 2011 in eBooks

Research published yesterday by IHS iSuppli reveals that the US book publishing industry has reached a “major inflection point” in which there will be a long-term decline in revenue, as e-book sales fail to reach the levels required to compensate the fall in physical book sales.

Over the period of 2010-2014, the book publishing industry will face a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) decline of 3% for both e-books and paper books. This reflects a fall in revenue from $25 billion between 2005 and 2010 to $22.7 billion between 2010 and 2014. Driving the decline is a 5% fall in the CAGR of physical book revenue, which far outweighs the 40% CAGR in e-books. This is mostly due to the fact that the selling prices of e-books are on average 40% lower than those of paper copies.

Meet The A-List Authors Of E-Book Self Publishing

Posted on Sunday, 13 March 2011 in eBooks

Authors who self-published their books have traditionally done it out of desperation—it was the result of being ignored or rejected by publishing houses. And without the marketing muscle of a publishing house, most of those self-published books were doomed commercially.

Amazon Reaches The E-Book Tipping Point: Kindle Sales Blow By Print

Posted on Wednesday, 09 March 2011 in eBooks

Hard to believe that just a few years ago, e-books were still a novelty item. Now Amazon is selling more e-book titles than print combined.

Amazon says that since April, it has been selling 105 Kindle titles for every 100 print copies it moves. Reminder: Amazon only started selling Kindle e-readers in November 2007.

Avoid Digital Publishing Mistakes by Thinking of it as Investing

Posted on Sunday, 06 March 2011 in eBooks

There's some shrillness going on around digital publishing - whether it's folks worrying about not getting a lot of money away, or the fight or coming civil war between DIY (or VIP or whatever) writers and the establishment (agents, publishers, all of the above). I'm not saying they're wrong - but it's far simpler than all that.
